Marinus de Goederen (aka "a balladeer) is a Dutch singer-songwriter with an impressive history in the Netherlands and the U.S. His melodic songs have occasional dark lyrics and his inspirations cover first lady Jackie Kennedy, porn star Bambi Woods and Matthew Shepard.
Zip Records released "Where Are You Bambi Woods" in the U.S. in 2010. The American version of album "Bambi Woods" also contained two of "a balladeers" big Dutch hits "Swim With Sam" and "Fortune Teller" (originally on EMI). Marinus spent one year living in the United States and such experience, combined with his fascination with "the land of the free" results in a melodic interpretation of the American experience unlike anything created by American songwriters. The title track concerns the disappearance of cult porn movie star (Debbie Does Dallas) Bambi Woods and when singer Marinus "did Dallas" himself for a year, the intensity and bazaar ness of such experience became the influence for the albums' lyrically driven pop/rock songs. The wistful and beautiful single "Oh, California" manages to convey a longing and dream both personal and universal. Such perspective continues on the poignant song about Jackie Kennedy (Nightmare on Elm Street) and the chilling and moving ode to murdered gay university student Matthew Shepard (Roster Child).
The follow up album "Sorry Kid" was perhaps his most personal album to date with such intriguing titles as "Why Hitler Loved His Dog" and "What The World Needs Now Is A Killer Storm". This album was a double CD and released on Zip Records in the US in 2014.
A balladeer has collaborated with Peter Butcher (BLØF) and Robert Kirby of Nick Drake fame (who also did the arrangements for Zip Records' Henrik Levy for "A Letter From a City Man"). The main man (Marinus) and the band have made two sojourns to the US to promote the two albums - appearing at the Bowery Electric, the Cutting Room and Pockwood - all in New York.
In March 2016, Zip Records was the lucky label to release new album "A Wolf at the Door" in the Benelux. This album entered the Dutch charts at #24 and continues the pattern of expanding the band's audience in the Netherlands and Belgium. "Wolves at the Door" will likely see a U.S. release in fall of 2016.
