biography
Sterling started off with a bang. Prior to cutting away to Europe at age 17, he played in the Topanga Canyon (California) avant guard band “Science & Industri.” However, finding the perfect bohemian scene in Berlin, Sterling hooked up with the notorious underground German artist Gasi Twist. They formed “Sterling/Twist” and catapulted to the big time; appearing regularly on German television and releasing several dance rock records to critical acclaim, Sterling/Twist were all over the airwaves.
Rap rock band “Skin” came next, bringing Sterling on dizzying tours all over Europe and Russia. With the opportunity to work with Will Calhoun (Living Colour, Mos Def…), Doug Wimbish (Mos Def, Mick Jagger, Paula Cole…), Dave Stewart, Terence Trent D’arby and Howie Gaddawi (Amy Winehouse), Sterling moved to London. Live shows with Living Colour members and a critically acclaimed E.P. “Bad Girls And Beautiful Boys” provided Sterling with impressive credentials to return to Los Angeles and work closely with (among others) Ivan Neville, Fabrice Morvan (Milli Vanilli), Eric Gales and Mike Phirmen (Hard & Phirm).
In 2008 “The Sterling Experience” is ready for the world. The album “Good Hurt” is produced and performed by Sterling and Mike Phirmen. Most impressive of all, the Executive Producer is none other than Michelle Phillips of “The Mamas & The Papas!” Three tracks are co-produced and performed along with Doug Wimbish and Will Calhoun. The track “Dreamin” grew out of Sterling’s association with Fabrice, one-half of the infamous duo Milli Vanilli; the song tells the story of that group. “Julia” was co-written with Cody Chessnutt of the Roots.
In the tradition of Jimi Hendrix (note cover of 6 wuz 9), Seal, Lenny Kravitz, Terence Trent D’arby, and Ben Harper, “Good Hurt” is an electric and star-studded album. Cutting to the words of Sterling, “this music has no bounds. It is colorless music (in the vernacular) for all music lovers…I ain’t buying the old stereotypes…”Did we fail to mention that above all, this album is fun! In a natural way, it has a breezy (and occasional funky) quality with some tongue in cheek and grease on the runway. File under soul, funk, R&B, pop, and rock n’ roll! The Sterling Experience will be touring the west coast of the US extensively in the fall of 2008. A press and media campaign was instigated in August/September 2008.
