Throwback Thursday to a time of freedom (before corona) of Lead-singer of Snowapple laurien Schreuder’s last winter in los angeles. Her artist in residency in silver lake inspired her to write new songs for her theater shows “Mr Moon”, “Project Lucy” and solo project. she recently toured mexico with her band and organized a cultural festival “Le jardin rouge” in Amsterdam last march. she invited us over on a sunny, laid back afternoon in january before she headed over to hollywood for a mime lesson - sharing her fav corners in her LA abode and her plans and played new songs on the guitar.

Has your experience in LA contributed to your creative process?

Definitely, LA has shone new light on many things. I had the opportunity to try out new material and ideas in a safe and supportive environment and break free of my old habits. 

Out of some moments of improvisation new songs came to life. For me LA is hugely inspiring. As well as Joshua tree, where I spent at least one third of my time writing new songs, philosophying about trees.

Tell us about the home you‘re staying in

 I was staying in Silverlake in an old craftsman house. Beautiful wood. Beautiful house full of books. Also the neighborhood was great. Everything close by and enough strangely beautiful people.

How does a perfect day look like in Silver Lake ?

Wake up, drink lots of coffee, go for a hike, read books in the park. Record  music. Talk to strangers.  

Maybe see some art or artists or go to see a show in the night. 

What is your new music about?

We worked a lot on combining story and music. We incorporated prophet 6 (synth) as well as poetry. Some people say that recently my voice has changed a bit. I wouldn't be surprised if they find out it physically changed. I feel quite different lately. Older? God I hope not!

My new single Simple Things is simple, and at the same time of quite epic. That's not the first time we combine these two, but I never had so many violins sounding at the same time....

Will we see any Beach Boys covers in the near future? 😁

Definitely! They are my heroes!!

What do you miss most about Amsterdam when you’re abroad?

I have to say I don't miss much when I'm gone. But when I get back I always realize what a gem of a city it is. Going everywhere on the bike. Having old friends and family around

Any advice for aspiring recording artists?

Hmm.. I think people shouldn't give too much advice. There are too many opinions flying around. But well, I can tell from my own experience that for me, going to another city, outside of my comfort zone, artístically really improved my art....
